We were pretty much packed up and ready to go and just relaxing for a bit before it was time. Gerard had Sirius radio going on his iPad through the TV when what song comes up? Sweet Caroline. Well, Gerard was PUMPED after that! THEN…what song is next? Peter, Paul & Mary singing “Leaving on a Jet Plane”. How ironic is that?
In addition, at the last minute, he realized we had booked the Maple Leaf Lounge at the airport way back when we had booked the flights. Well, we were meeting up with Eleanor and Paul at the airport, so we didn’t need that. Bottom line, we now have a $111 credit on our next flight with Air Canada!
We were finally ready to go and were picked up by Waterloo Taxi (LOKAL) to head off to the airport. Here’s a shot of the 2 people I rode with in the car.
It was a reasonably pleasant flight - a few bumps here and there, but nothing serious, just the way I like it. I watched a movie - Oppenheimer - quite the story. And I got some sleep, but not a lot. The pilot told us we were within an hour of landing and were just flying over the Swiss Alps - beautiful.
We landed without incident - again, just the way I like it - at Marco Polo Airport in Venice. Going through customs and getting our checked bag was no issue at all. We had to travel quite a way to find the water bus, Alilaguna. Fortunately they had many moving sidewalks. This is our “bus”, and the port from which they come and go. Just think of boats around here as cars or buses at home. There are taxis, buses, private boats you can hire (not drive yourself), etc.
It took a while, but we got off at San Marco Giardinetti, the stop closest to our hotel and walked. There are no cars in Venice, as you can imagine.
We walked through San Marco Piazza
and found the street for our hotel - Calle dei Spechieri
- and yep, that’s the “street” we walked down. I took it up a bit higher so I wouldn’t get a photo of the person walking right in front, but it’s that narrow.
Anyway, we found the hotel, checked in, but couldn’t go to our room for a while, so left our luggage there and went off to find a cold one and a bite to eat (not hard to find around here). We finally got into our room and had to have a nap - we were running on about an hour or two sleep within about 24 hours. I got up after a couple of hours and went out for a walk around and returned with a couple of cannolis to tide us over until dinner. Gerard had another nap while I did this blog post and we’ll head out shortly for dinner and a good night’s sleep tonight! It’s currently 6:30 pm here (12:30 pm EDT).
